Lauren McGowan, DVM with cat PennyDr. Lauren McGowan, our Chief of Staff, attended Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut for her undergraduate degree, and the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in Basseterre, St. Kitts for her veterinary degree. Prior to joining our team, she practiced at other New York veterinary hospitals in Plainview, Port Washington, Huntington, Westbury, and Oyster Bay. Her special interests include ultrasonography, radiology, internal medicine and animal emergency/critical care.

In her free time, Dr. McGowan enjoys fishing, boating, going to the beach, biking, and traveling. She has four rescue dogs — Kiwi (a Yorkshire terrier who was hypoglycemic as a puppy), Mango (a mix who was hit by a car and lost a leg), Pecan (a maltipoo who was born with cataracts and needed surgery to remove them), and Hazelnut (a Yorkshire terrier who has a shoulder deformity). She clearly loves animals – all shapes and sizes – and we couldn't be more thrilled to have her on our team!

Leslie Dattner, DVMDr. Leslie Dattner is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He received his BS and MS degrees from Colorado State University and his DVM degree from Cornell University in June of 1975.

Dr. Dattner practiced in Staten Island and Lynbrook before opening his own office in Baldwin, New York in June of 1983. His practice is exclusively a small animal practice.

Dr. Dattner is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, New York State Veterinary Medical Society, Long Island Veterinary Medical Association, and an associate member of the New York City Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Paula Shields, DVMDr. Paula Shields grew up in Breezy Point, New York and currently resides in Oceanside, New York. She received an undergraduate degree from St. John’s University and earned a DVM degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Prior to joining the Baldwin Harbor Animal Hospital team, Dr. Shields practiced in Great Neck, New York. Her special interests include internal medicine and dermatology.

In her spare time, Dr. Shields enjoys painting, gardening with her husband, and spending time with family. She also shares her home with three dogs, a golden retriever, a lab mix, and an Australian shepherd mix, along with a domestic shorthair cat.
